Shooter has a sensitive personality and suffers from ulcers especially during intense periods of training and horse shows. He does not go off his feed like other horses with ulcers but his personality definitely changes. He becomes nervous, high-strung, spooky and overall very anxious. He bites the bit more and just seems uncomfortable. We used to manage this by giving him UlcerGuard during the shows and keeping him on a ulcer support supplement from SmartPak, but it just did not seem to help long term.

My trainer suggested trying Purina’s Outlast Gastric Support Supplement after he talked to a few other trainers who have put their horses on it. All the trainers had rave reviews of it and many had completely taken their horses off of UlcerGuard even during stressful times of traveling and horse showing. We started Shooter on it in March and have been incredibly happy with the results. His personality has normalized and he is the same horse pretty much every day (although he is part thoroughbred, so cold windy days can make him a little crazy). He seems so much happier and calmer and I directly attribute that to the fact that his stomach feels better.

Outlast was developed to support proper pH in stressful situations thus keeping them comfortable and cutting down on the occurrence of ulcers. Outlast supplement contains a proprietary mineral complex with a unique honeycomb structure. The porous structure of this natural and bio-available source of calcium and magnesium increases its surface area and enhances its capacity to support proper gastric pH. Outlast buffers faster and to a higher pH than other products. Purina has a great video on their YouTube page showing how effective Outlast is at buffering a horse’s stomach (click here to watch).

If your horses suffers from ulcers or other gastric issues definitely talk to your trainer or vet about trying Outlast. It is a supplement so you top dress it on your horse’s daily feed. You can even feed a snack of it an hour before stressful situations like training sessions, trailering or showing. Available on feed stores that carry Purina.
