Product Review: SmartPak Soft Padded Leather Halter
About a year ago I became tired of replacing nylon halters every few months when they became faded, worn, stiff and frayed. I began looking for a leather alternative that would be durable but still soft and pliable (so many leather halters on the market are super stiff). On a whim I ordered SmartPak’s Soft Padded Leather Halter for my gelding Shooter. I was pleasantly surprised at how soft and supple the leather is without having to soak it in oil (which softens leather but leaves it oily feeling forever). It is also extremely durable and has held up well to daily use for over a year, enduring hanging on the fence outside during turnout thru cold wind, hot sun, and light rain. It looks and feels pretty much like the day I bought it. Shooter and Dreamer both have one and I just ordered Scout one when her nylon halter started looking old.
They come in black or havana (dark brown leather) with a wide variety of colored trims (there are a whopping 21 different color combos). The black leather has silver hardware and the havana has brass hardware. They come in three sizes, cob, horse and oversize and you can add a personalized name plate. Shooter (who is 17 hands) wears the horse size in black with gray trim and Dreamer (15’1 hand reining horse) wears the cob size in black with havana trim. The halters do seem to run a little big so I suggest the cob size for your standard quarter horse who has a normal sized head. They cost $99.95 and are available to buy at SmartPak.com.
