Around The Barn: A Few Of My Favorite Things

Around The Barn: A Few Of My Favorite Things

We all have our tried and true favorites that make our lives in the barn easier. Here is a current roundup of a few of my favorites, some that are relatively new to me and others that I have used for years.

AcuRite Magnetic Indoor Temperature Gauge:

I have been using this for about two years in our barn and I love it! Since it is magnetic I just stick it on the side of a stall and it lets me know the current temperature in the barn. This is super helpful especially during spring and fall because the temps can swing from the “horses need clothes” to “they will sweat in clothes”. I have learned that any temp over 60 usually means time to pull sheets and blankets off. It also helps me tell my barn helper what to do with opening doors and windows and taking off or putting on horse clothes when I can’t be there. It is a cheap and easy solution to help keep your horses comfortable. Available at Amazon for $7.90

AcuRite Indoor Temperature Gauge

I love how it shows you the humidity, temperature and the 24 hour high and low temps.

Kensington Hay Bag:

I have used all kinds of hay bags and these by far are my favorite. They are the most durable which is important since I have one horse who rubs her whole body against her hay bag. They have a plastic rim under heavy duty webbing that allows the bags to be filled with hay easily and they will hold at least 2-3 flakes. Their straps are heavy duty and durable. They offer a traditional open front style and a slow feed style with a net. Available from $64.99 on Kensington’s website.

Epona Tiger’s Tongue Horse Groomer:

There are not enough words to describe how much I love this product! I use it every day and it is my go-to grooming product. This multi-tasking tool tackles dirt, debris, dandruff, sweat marks and caked on mud with ease. It’s rough, sponge-like texture deep cleans beneath the hair without a cloud of dust, trapping all the dust and dirt in the groomer. It also acts as a massager and leaves your horse clean, shiny and happy. It is especially effective at removing dry, caked on mud and hard to remove dried sweat makes, removing them effortlessly with a few swipes. Available at SmartPak for $7.95 (order a couple of them).

Easy-Up Spray Bottle Holders:

I discovered these handy little gadgets from Schneider’s this summer and they worked wonders at keeping all my fly spray bottles corralled and handy. These sturdy wire metal holders fit over my stall walls and keep fly spray and other spray bottles up and off the floor. You can buy them in a few configurations, single holder, double holder and four bottle holder that all fit standard 32 oz bottles as well as single and double holders for wider spray bottles. Funny how something so simple can make a big difference in keeping your barn neat and tidy. They are available from $9.99 - $34.99 at Schneider’s.
