Odds & Ends
I can’t believe February is over! January seems to take forever and then you blink and February is gone. Our February was ruled by rollercoaster weather, 60’s one day and then 20’s the next with snow and ice. Just when you start dreaming about spring, Mother Nature reminds us it is still winter with an arctic blast.
I also had my first horse show of the season and the reviews were mixed. It definitely had first show of the season vibes, our first day of showing was a bit of a mess and our second day was better but overall it showed me all the areas we need to work on and polish.
Thru it all, I found a few fun things to bring some joy to the month. I present my Odds & Ends.
Straight leg jeans are here to stay and I can honestly say the Pixie Tomcat Straight Jeans by Mother are my favorite of the bunch. They are super soft and stretchy and have a button-fly high rise that is oh so flattering. The straight leg is just straight enough with a tighter fit in the knee that they don’t make my legs look short and stumpy.
I think I may have found the unicorn of sports bras. The Natori Dynamic Convertible Contour Sports Bra does it all. It provides high impact coverage and bounce control, great shape and is incredibly comfortable. Translation= You can ride even the roughest horse in it and feel in control without looking like you have a uniboob and you won’t want to peel it off as soon as you leave the barn. The buttery soft fabric also wicks away sweat and it comes in a nude color way that won’t show under white show shirts. It is virtual impossible to find sports bras in nude!
I am a big fan of a horse treats that also have healthy benefits and Buckeye Nutrition’s Reasons Joint Support Treats do just that with the addition of glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM, all ingredients for maintaining healthy joints and supporting a healthy inflammatory response. I sprinkle a few with a scoop of electrolytes in my horses’ feeders for a healthy snack when they come in from turnout.
I love to listen to podcasts in the barn and the Feed Room Chemist: An Equine Nutrition Podcast is one of my favorites. Dr Jyme Nichols (an equine nutritionist for Bluebonnet Feeds) covers a wide range of equine nutrition topics with a science based approach. I have seriously learned so much listening to her.
I keep a salt block in all my horses’ stalls and have recently discovered the Redmond Rock Mineral Salt Rock. My horses love licking on it, even Scout who won’t touch other salt blocks. What makes it special is that it is 100% natural with none of the chemicals found in other salt/mineral blocks and it contains 60 + trace minerals (twice the content of Himalayan salt blocks). It also contains essential electrolytes that encourage horses to drink. It is also mined and packaged in the US.
