Go Green With WeatherBeeta
Did you know that in the US, every day, we throw away more than 60 million plastic water bottles? That staggering amount primarily ends up in landfills and polluting our land and water, as only about 12% of those are recycled. It also takes over 1,000 years for one water bottle to decompose and that means are landfills are overflowing with 2 million tons of water bottles. Environmental problems can seem monumental and our day to day efforts to be environmentally friendly can seem too small but if everyone from individuals to businesses can commit to making these small changes we can make a difference.
That is why I was thrilled to see that WeatherBeeta created an environmentally friendly blanket option for horses and dogs. The WeatherBeeta Green-Tec line uses recycled materials for the outer fabric and lining. Each blanket saves about 340 plastic bottles from going into landfills. These plastic bottles are shredded and then processed into polyester fiber yarn that is used to make the fabric. The Green-Tec fabric also uses 50% less energy to produce than traditional blanket fabric. The Green-Tec line is composed of a waterproof turnout blanket (available in 3 weights, light, medium and heavy) a medium/lite stable blanket, a lite plus sheet and two dog coats.
Scout needed a new blanket this winter and I was excited to order her a blanket that can do it’s part in helping our environment. I got the medium/lite stable blanket since Scout spends most of her time in a heated barn. It is an extremely durable, lightweight blanket that actually repels dust and shavings. The fabric feels like a fine yet tough cordura fabric and nothing seems to stick to it. It seems to fit her well and keep her warm. It also washed very well. The only negative is that it doesn’t have leg straps, only criss cross belly straps and you have to use the tail cord to keep the back together. I don’t like tail cords and prefer leg straps. I do like the adjustable buckle and snap open front and the black and green color combo is fun and elegant.
If your horse needs a new blanket this winter and like the idea of helping the environment then I definitely recommend getting a WeatherBeeta Green-Tec Blanket. Available at WeatherBeeta, Corro and SmartPak.
Another way you can help reduce plastic water bottle pollution is to carry a reusable water bottle to the barn instead of reaching for a plastic bottle. I am a huge fan of the Stanley IceFlow Flip Straw because it allows for easy drinking and will not spill (a necessity in the barn). You can also put it in the dishwasher. It comes in a wide variety of colors and sizes from 17 oz to 64 oz. It’s unique double-walled design keeps your drink cold for 12 hours and if iced, it can keep your drink cold for 2 days! Available at Stanley.
