A Peek Inside Dreamer's Feed Bucket
I love seeing what other horse owner’s feed their horses and thought it would be fun to do a sneak peek into Dreamer’s Feed Bucket, covering his grain and supplements. Dreamer is a very easy-keeper and slightly overweight and gets worked and ridden a few times a week. He is a retired reining horse who now does the ranch riding with me, so he does not need a huge amount of calories or energy. He gets fed super nice, green bermuda hay pretty much free choice and gets a few hours of turnout in grass pastures.
He is currently being fed Triple Crown’s Lite feed am/pm. Due to his age and being a little overweight my vet suggested he go on a low starch, molasses free feed to help him lose a little weight and try to avoid insulin resistance. Triple Crown’s Lite is a grain and molasses free, reduced calorie, high fiber pelleted feed that is perfect for older, easy keepers as well as horses who have Cushings, Insulin Resistance or Laminitis. One of the things I love about it, is that two pounds of Triple Crown Lite provides the same amount of vitamins and minerals that are normally provided in five to eight pounds of competitor feeds. So you can feed less of it to easy keepers but they still get all the vitamins and minerals in a smaller serving of feed. You can learn more at triplecrownfeed.com.
As far as supplements go Dreamer gets a SmartPak with SmartGut and SmartFlex Ultimate.
Dreamer has a history of having ulcers and is perpetually girthy so my vet recommended keeping him on SmartGut. I love SmartGut because it includes ingredients to neutralize excess gastric acid, probiotics, prebiotics, soluble fiber, the amino acids L-glutamine and glycine, soothing herbs (Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root) and other safeguards for a healthy stomach lining all in one easy to feed pellet.
Dreamer is also on SmartFlex Ultimate because he has a history of suspensory issues as well as being a retired reiner and it provides soft tissue and joint support. I recently did a post about how much I love SmartFlex Ultimate and you can read more about it here.
Besides his SmartPak, Dreamer also gets a scoop of BioMane and Farrier’s Formula to keep his long mane and tail and hooves in tip top shape. I have also written a post that details the benefits and results I get from using BioMane and you can read more about it here. Farrier’s Formula is a relatively new addition and after a few months of use I am super impressed. His feet look harder and healthier with less chips and cracks. I also like that it’s results have been studied and backed by independent research and it is consistently the number 1 recommended supplement by farriers.
And last but not least Dreamer also gets Purina’s Outlast Gastric Support Supplement to help keep ulcers away. I am a huge fan of Outlast and you can read why here.
