Bug Bites Be Gone
The dog days of summer have set in and with the unrelenting heat, comes all the bugs plus a whole host of allergens that can leave horses bumpy and itchy. My secret weapon for fighting these bug bites and allergy bumps is KineticVet’s EquiShield IBH Spray.
This handy spray contains a powerhouse blend of an antibacterial to fight off infection (clorhexedine gluconate), a topical anesthetic to relive pain (pramoxine), an anti-inflammatory to help irritation (hydrocortisone) and a natural fly repellant (citronella) to keep bugs away. Bug bites and allergy bumps are usually gone within 1-2 applications. The handy spray feature allows you to quickly and easily give your horse instant relief and unlike creams or salves, the spray soaks in and goes to work without leaving behind a sticky residue.
Dreamer came in from turnout yesterday covered in bumps (from who knows what) and after giving him a cool rinse I sprayed his bumps with the IBH Spray and the next morning almost all of his bumps were completely gone. This spray is also a life-saver for Shooter who is allergic to fly bites and it really helps get rid of any that pop up.
I highly recommend keeping a bottle on hand especially if bugs and allergens bother your horses. It works wonders for horses who tend to itch and rub out their tails and skin from bug bites. I am not going to lie, I have sprayed it on some of my own mosquito bites (but don’t tell my vet that). You can purchase it at FarmVet and Valley Vet. It costs $37.99 and one bottle lasts me for most of the year.
Another product I use to help calm and heal summer-ravaged skin is Honest’s Soothing Therapy Body Wash. I add few squirts of this super gentle, colloidal oatmeal and coconut oil infused body wash to a bucket of warm water and then sponge it all over my horses to help heal any bites, bumps or cuts. It leaves their skin soft, soothed and moisturized. Available online at Target and Honest.
